Grand Canyon

Sensei, Greg and Cat hikingOn Oct 9th and 10th 2010, Mike Armstrong joined by his two sighted guides hiked the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim.  This amazing hike was another hike-a-thon to raise donations for the Foundation for Blind Children, one of Mike’s favorite charities.

Canyon Crawlers

The Canyon Crawlers as they were named by the FBC was a group of 13 blind hikers who were determined to hike from the North Rim to South Rim of the Grand Canyon in one day. This hike-a-thon was organized to raise essential funds for the FBC’s Infant program as well as raising awareness and shattering the worlds perception of the blind.

Their effort was a great success, the Canyon Crawlers team received national media exposure and was even invited as guests on the Today Show.

While Mike Armstrong and his sighted guides were a part of the Canyon Crawlers team, the team took the hike a step further. Mike Armstrong was in training for his historic Arizona Trail hike, and in true Team Armstrong fashion they took the Canyon a step further by hiking from the South Rim to the North Rim on Oct 9th, and back from the North Rim to the South Rim on Oct 10th.

This was the first time Mike Armstrong has ever hiked the Grand Canyon either sighted or blind, and not only did he hike the Canyon from Rim to Rim he hiked it twice. The hike was a great success, the first day took about 14 hours of hiking, and the second took about 12.5 hours. These were some of the most tiring and exhausting hikes Mike has ever completed to date, but the prize of shattering perceptions was well worth the blisters and aches.
